Heart, Muscles and Joints - How do we make them work better?

Our heart is at the center of maintaining our life so we need to treat it well and give it the best opportunity to function in the most efficient way. In order to do this we need to train it, put it to the test and make it beat a little faster on a regular basis. To train it we participate in what we call cardio vascular exercise. This is any exercise that requires us to move and elevates our heart rate. To improve cardio vascular fitness we can participate in exercises such as walking, running, swimming, cycling, skipping, jumping, stair climbing and many more.

Muscles are made for movement. If we don't continue to move them they waste away and are unable to function as they should. By training our muscles we can improve their overall strength and condition. Strength training can be simple or complex. It can involve the use of just your own body or weights and machinery. Whatever used as long as the muscle is being challenged then it should help maintain or improve strength & endurance. When our muscles are strong we can functionally move better so that everyday tasks become easier such as any lifting or anything that requires repetitive movement. Better muscle condition can also improve metabolism so that our body is able to burn energy (or unwanted fat stores) more efficiently.

Joints are an essential part of movement. They allow us to stand, walk, reach, bend, twist and more. When our joints are not functioning to their potential or are injured it is quite difficult to perform our everyday tasks. When we look to improve the function of our joints we look to improve the flexibility or range of motion around the joint. We can do this by regular stretching. Simple, non impact exercises that help stretch the muscles, ligaments and tendons around the joint. Common injuries often result due to poor flexibility and lack of joint function, especially through tightness through the hamstrings in the back of the legs, lower back and chest muscles. By maintaining good flexibility we can prevent injury, move better, perform everyday tasks better and feel great.

For optimal health, keep your heart, muscles and joints in their best condition by regularly participating in exercises that help improve their function.
