What is the Best Exercise
Often we ask after the best exercise. Realistically there is no one exercise that wins the prize as the absolute best exercise overall as it will depend on a number of factors including the individual, the objective and the environment.
The individual has certain characteristics that may determine the suitability of the exercise such as age, body shape, medical conditions, injury, experience, interests and of course it will be the individual that will determine what they wish to be the outcome of doing the exercise. These characteristics will influence whether or not the ideal exercise exercise is high or low impact, whether it is cardio or resistance based, beginner level or advanced.
The objective plays a key role is exercise suitability and prescription. All exercises should have a clear purpose to its action and achieve a specific goal. Having a specific objective will definitely influence which type of exercise will be the best to achieve it. If it is a cardio based objective such as improve fitness then the exercise itself would need to be cardio based, if the objective is to improve strength then the best exercise would be a resistance type exercise.
The environment will influence the best choice of exercise as it may be determined by the surrounding resources, space, equipment and support available. Some exercises cannot be performed without the required equipment, some exercises are better performed with a group of people and some exercises will require more space than others.
So in summary the best exercise for you will be one that is suitable for you as an individual taking into consideration your age, medical and injury history etc. One that will achieve what you want to achieve and one that you can easily access in your given environment. If the exercise you choose can fulfill all of these requirements then it may just be the best for you so do it and do it on a regular basis!
